Record Linkage of Health Care Insurance
نویسنده
چکیده
Design: The procedure for record linkage has three major components—data standardization, weight estimation, and matching. The proposed method was designed to incorporate a combination of exact and probabilistic matching techniques. Measurements: The procedure was validated using convergent, divergent, and criterion validity measures. Results: The output of the process achieved a sensitivity of 92 percent and a specificity that approached 100 percent. Conclusions: The procedure is a first step in addressing the current trend toward larger and more complex databases. ■ J Am Med Inform Assoc. 2001;8:281–288. TIMOTHY W. VICTOR, PHD, ROBERTINO M. MERA, MD, PHD quality that are prone to error. Another problem is the enormous size of the data sets to be linked. Linking must occur both within and between data sets. The unreliability of the identifying information contained in successive records of the same subject presents a significant challenge. Specifically, limitations of either matching technique include the difficulty in handling large and heterogeneous data sets, the need to provide a priori weights for probabilistic matching, and the need to generate unique identifiers. Furthermore, exact matching has low sensitivity, and probabilistic matching is computationally expensive in large data sets. This paper describes a method developed for linking records of individual patients and health care providers across time and geography. The method was designed to incorporate a combination of exact and probabilistic matching techniques. Finally, this method provides a static unique identifier for every patient and health care provider.

Development of a Database of Health Insurance Claims: Standardization of Disease Classifications and Anonymous Record Linkage
BACKGROUND Health insurance claims (ie, receipts) record patient health care treatments and expenses and, although created for the health care payment system, are potentially useful for research. Combining different types of receipts generated for the same patient would dramatically increase the utility of these receipts. However, technical problems, including standardization of disease names a...

Record linkage may create powerful datasets with which investigators can conduct studies evaluating the impact of tests or interventions on health [1]. Linked data may allow studies that might otherwise be very expensive or impossible to conduct. Databases that contain information about the same persons but do not share a unique identifier can be linked using the information that is common to t...
متن کاملLinkage Rate Between Data From Health Checks and Health Insurance Claims in the Japan National Database
BACKGROUND Japan's National Database (NDB) includes data on health checks and health insurance claims, is linkable using hash functions, and is available for research use. However, the linkage rate between health check and health insurance claims data has not been investigated. METHODS Linkage rate was evaluated by comparing observed medical and pharmaceutical charges among health check recip...

OBJECTIVE To evaluate the potential advantages and limitations of the use of the Brazilian hospital admission authorization forms database and the probabilistic record linkage methodology for the validation of reported utilization of hospital care services in household surveys. METHODS A total of 2,288 households interviews were conducted in the county of Duque de Caxias, Brazil. Information ...
متن کاملUsing personal health insurance numbers to link the Canadian Cancer Registry and the Discharge Abstract Database.
BACKGROUND Linking cancer registry and administrative data can reveal health care use patterns among cancer patients. The Canadian Cancer Registry (CCR) contains personal health insurance numbers (HINs) that facilitate linkage to hospitalization information in the Discharge Abstract Database (DAD). DATA AND METHODS Valid HINs, captured in the CCR or obtained through probabilistic linkages to ...
متن کاملValidation of de-identified record linkage to ascertain hospital admissions in a cohort study
BACKGROUND Cohort studies can provide valuable evidence of cause and effect relationships but are subject to loss of participants over time, limiting the validity of findings. Computerised record linkage offers a passive and ongoing method of obtaining health outcomes from existing routinely collected data sources. However, the quality of record linkage is reliant upon the availability and accu...
